Hopper wants to revolutionize travel search using “big data”

Hopper captures travel data such as blog posts, reviews and photos, and brings the data together in one place, allowing consumers to discover travel destinations through simple keywords, making travel planning easier and more relevant.

Hopper, a startup aiming to revolutionize travel search using "big data," said Wednesday it's raised a $12 million Series B round as it readies to publicly launch Hopper.com in the fall.

Hopper's travel database is growing rapidly. The database has more than half a billion pages of travel data crawled so far, and Hopper expects to double that by the end of the year.

"It's most definitely the largest database of travel content in the world," said Lalonde, a former VP at Expedia. "We don't know where the ceiling is on this - the web is a very big place."

Hopper's eventual plan is to earn revenue from referrals to travel booking sites.
