Marriott.com producing revenues of $800’000 per hour?

Marriott, which a new study ranks as the top-performing hotel booking site, believes it could lose nearly $800,000 every hour its website isn't running, says George Corbin, the company's vice president of e-commerce strategy.
As airlines, hotels and online travel agents seek to capture a bigger piece of the pie by changing their websites to make them more customer-friendly, many are not delivering the speed consumers demand.
An exclusive 15-month study done at USA TODAY's request by Compuware Gomez, which monitors website performance, reveals that many travel sites take more than two seconds for their home pages to load. The study also found a wide disparity in the performance of home pages and the performance and speed of websites during consumer transactions last year and this year's first quarter.
Online shoppers generally expect pages to load in two seconds or less, and 40% of shoppers say they'll abandon Web pages that take three seconds or more to appear, according to 2009 data from Forrester Research.
