Most U.S. corporate travel bookings moving online

August 22, 2012 | Online Travel

The spread of mobile and tablet apps and corporate emphasis on cutting costs is sparking a surge in online travel bookings by U.S. companies. The growing ease with which consumers book leisure travel online is prompting companies and employees to do the same.

PhoCusWright predicts online corporate travel bookings will grow through 2013, when $56.2 billion, or 56% of all U.S. corporate travel dollars, will be spent online. This is up from $35.8 billion, or 50%, in 2009.

In 2012, the report says total spending on corporate online travel bookings will be $52.8 billion, or 55% of all U.S. corporate travel bookings.

"We're seeing smaller to midsized companies moving online (for travel bookings) that were hesitant to do so," said PhoCusWright analyst Susan Steinbrink.

The growing use of mobile technology by employees and businesses is aiding the trend, she says, though few corporate bookings are as yet made via mobile devices. "Mobile is an accelerant," she said.
