TripAdvisor’s travel trends for 2012

Compiled from the responses from more than 2,700 U.S. travelers, this year’s annual survey revealed that despite the economic climate, travel spending is on the rise. In fact, nearly one-third of travelers said they anticipate they’ll spend more on leisure travel next year than they did in 2011.

2012 is definitely shaping up to be an exciting year for travel according to the survey findings, which include:

-90% of travelers are planning to take two or more leisure trips next year, with 24% planning five or more getaways.

-The top trip picks for travelers in 2012 are beach trips (44%), cultural trips (42%), road trips (40%), city trips (36%), and guys or girlfriends getaways (24%)

-68% plan to travel outside of the U.S. Of those travelers, 54% will visit Europe, 52% will go to a North American destination outside the U.S. like Canada or Mexico, and 12% will travel to Asia.

-The top three international cities U.S. travelers plan to visit are Paris, London and Rome.

-44% plan on using their mobile phone or smartphone more as a travel resource during trips in 2012.
